Lorenzo Miola: “I am drawn to the unexpected and I enrich myself and learn through continuous experimentation”
“I am Lorenzo Miola, an Italian illustrator and visual storyteller based in Turin. I am an avid reader, a music nostalgic and an art lover. I get my main inspiration from observing the people around me: telling stories through drawings is what makes illustration a continuous and evolving passion. I am drawn to the unexpected and I enrich myself and learn through continuous experimentation.”
His passion started at an early age with his first comics and magazines. His dream has always been to draw whatever exists in the world, on whatever subject and/or medium exists. Today he works as a freelance in a communication studio and at the same time he devotes himself to his personal work, mainly based on illustration.
When Lorenzo finds himself creating his works, whether it is a personal illustration or a commission, the research is always his starting point.
In this phase his mind becomes like a “sponge”, capable of quickly producing and collecting cues, ideas, references, without losing sight of those who have dealt with that particular subject before him.
“When a glimmer of an idea begins to form, even if it is indefinite and not necessarily clear, I turn it into to paper; any white space becomes a battlefield where I pour signs and lines that gradually take shape. At this stage I also begin to study the general structure: the volumes, the balances, the planes, the encumbrances and the weights that the subjects will have within the composition. It is only at the end of this phase that I am able to approach the digital drawing with a clear structure of the illustration that I am going to create”.
The choice of his colour palettes is not definitive and static, but inspired from time to time by the atmosphere of light and shadow that is created unconsciously and by the main emotions that the drawing itself will trigger.
